The evil owls are very "species-ist" and think that other owl species are sub-par and meant to be enslaved -- but the Guardians see the worth and contribution of all owls.
Soren is a strong positive role model: He's kind, selfless, and brave. He cares for his friends and family and believes the best of everyone. Gylfie is small but willing to fly away with Soren and later acts bravely despite her diminutive size. Ezylryb sagely explains that war isn't pretty and glorious -- that it's ugly and horrible and should be avoided if possible. Lots of animated violence, confrontations, and battles.
The scenes with owl-to-owl combat are dark and often feature extreme slow-motion close-ups. Several owls die -- one falls into fire, and others are killed during combat. It's obvious that the owls are dead or injured, even if there's no blood.
The 3-D makes the violence much more intense. Parents need to know that this 3-D adaptation of Kathryn Lasky 's best-selling Legend of the Guardians books is more intense and violent than most animated adventures -- even though the characters are all owls. The movie focuses on the conflict between a group of owls that considers themselves a master race entitled to enslave "lower species" of owls and the Guardians, a hidden group of warriors that fights to defend all owls from evil. With such a heavy plot and many action-packed battle sequences, this isn't age-appropriate for all young children.
But kids old enough to read the books and mature enough to handle the themes will benefit from the movie's message that all owls and therefore people are worthy, not just those whom one group thinks are better than the rest.

One day the brothers are kidnapped by two menacing owls that take them to the faraway lair of Metalbeak Joel Edgerton , the "Pure One" who believes that the Tyto owls are supreme to all other owl species. Soren and his new elf-owl friend, Gylfie Emily Barclay , are taught how to fly by a resistance-fighting owl who tells them that the Guardians are real and that Soren and Gylfie must warn them about Metalbeak's plans to rule the owl kingdom.
Miriam Margolyes , the friends fly to the Tree of Ga'Hoole to train and eventually fight as Guardians. The collaboration between director Zack Snyder and Animal Logic, the Australian effects and animation company responsible for Happy Feet , has yielded a visually stunning animated film. With many 3-D movies, the glasses feel like an unnecessary accessory, but here the technology is used artistically and imaginatively.
The extreme close-ups and slow-motion shots are impressive, as are the intense moments that focus on a single feather, an eye, a claw. It's stylized action reminiscent of Snyder's -- without all the blood and gore.
Soren's story is compelling and original -- even as it will remind you of many other heroes' journeys. There are so many layers to the plot -- from sibling rivalry Kladd stays behind to hero worship Geoffrey Rush plays the wise legendary warrior that Soren idolizes to family loyalty to political intrigue.
It's obvious from the movie's ending that the filmmakers would love to make more films in the series, which is always a gamble -- but this story is in-depth enough and the visuals so captivating that it wouldn't be unwelcome.

The veteran warlord easily overpowers Soren, who drops the branch and flies down after it.
At the same time, Ezylryb manages to throw Nyra off him, causing to her fall and land on an edge hard. Soren ends up trapped on the ground, against a rock as Metal Beak dives at him, preparing to kill him. However, Soren manages to reach the flaming branch just in time, and impales Metal Beak in the chest with it, killing him once and for all.
Shocked by her mate's death, Nyra retreats with the remaining Pure Ones. In the epilogue narrated by Soren, they return to the great tree with all the owlets, and Soren is greeted by Eglantine and his parents. Soren tells the story to a group of owlets, revealing that Nyra is still out there with a contingent of Pure Ones, and also mentions that Kludd's body was never found. Meanwhile, back in the smoking remains of the canyons, a shadowy figure with glowing red eyes most likely to be Kludd is shown looking at Metal Beak's body and mask.
The movie ends with Ezylryb and the band flying off into another storm. The credits roll with a shadow-puppetry presentation that summarizes all the events in the story. The Battle of the Ice Claws is a scene cut from the very beginning of the movie. However, the scene was fully animated and included in the Blu Ray edition of the film. The burnt hollow sequence consists of two scenes omitted in the final film that take place between Soren and Gylfie escaping St. Aegolius and Nyra taking Kludd and his fellow trainee solders to meet Metalbeak. Jatt and Jutt are flying with burning branches, the purpose of which is soon revealed. The lighting script shows no actual scenes of Kludd entering his former home, but it is implied that this is where he is heading due to the following events.
There is also a frame in the lighting script that shows Digger holding a flower in his beak, but the significance of this flower and how it relates to the scene is unknown.
Soren leads the band through Tyto, past the waterfall, and towards his family hollow. However, upon approaching, the band sees that the section of forest where Soren lived has been burnt in a fire. Presumably after kidnapping Eglantine, Jatt and Jutt used their burning branches to set the tree on fire. Based on short snippets shown in the trailer, it appears this scene was fully animated, although it never appeared on DVD in any form.
Also, some of the scenes will be shown in the future. Two panels follow the scene in which Allomere dupes two Guardians into attacking Pure One dummies that do not correlate with any scene in the finished movie. It appears that Nyra approaches Allomere, flanked by Jatt and Jutt, and speaks with him. What dialogue fills this scene is unknown. The panel directly following the last two aforementioned panels does not appear to relate to a scene in the finished movie. It shows Digger and Gylfie talking together.
This was perhaps a more lighthearted scene used to break tension between two rather tense scenes, but ultimately nothing more is known about it. Right after the scene in which Ezylryb speaks with Soren in the library, there are two panels showing the band gazing out at the monsoon that Ezylryb expects them to fly into. It is unknown what hollow the band are in during this scene, but it could possibly be the area Ezylryb and the band fly off of at the very end of the film there are some parallels in the framing of both scenes or it could possibly be the hollow of Ezylryb.
Two deleted scenes appear after the scene in which Soren revives Eglantine and realized Allomere is a traitor. A panel directly after this short flight sequence appears to show the band conversing with each other before they enter The Beaks and discover the trapped Guardians. In the finished movie, the band do not touch ground at all before discovering the Guardians.
The film's photorealistic visual animation, voice acting, cinematography and 3D effects were praised, while criticism was directed towards the film's character development and adapted plot, which were seen as 'esoteric' and 'predictable'. It reported the critics' consensus as " Legend of the Guardians ' dark tone and dazzling visuals are to be admired, even if they're ultimately let down by a story that never lives up to its full potential.

To leave out the battle with Jatt and Jutt due to extreme violence, could also be for compression of plot. The overall effect is sinister and scary. Soren risks his life to fly through fire to help save the Guardians.

For example: A group of owlets arrive in a darkened cave after being abducted from their families. They are immediately told that they are orphans and that their families do not want them. Most look very scared, and all of them want to go home.
He plummets into the sea while Soren races down to find him. He believes that his friend has been lost beneath the churning waves and despairs until one of the Guardians comes to the rescue.
Kludd takes Eglantine and offers her to the Pure Ones. She is terrified as she watches the soldiers and cowers behind Kludd. Later, when she begs to go home and promises not to tell what the Pure Ones are doing, she is brainwashed and ends up with the same milky-white, zombie stare as many other owlets.
Soren finds her unresponsive and vacant, just a shadow of her former self.
