When is snow coming

Read more about how we predict the weather and see how accurate we were last winter. In addition, we are in the early stages of Solar Cycle 25, which is expected to bring very low solar activity—historically associated with cooler temperatures, on average, across Earth.

All this awaits in the Almanac, along with stories about gargantuan hail is it becoming more common? Look inside the pages!

November 2, - pm. Will you please advise me of the probable weather for the Houston area this year? Last year we had a very nasty freeze that killed every one of my eight citrus trees one was 15 years old and the rest were about 10 years old , my two First Love gardenias eight years old , three green hedge-type shrubs five years old , my Monrovia Firecracker plant, my gorgeous Monrovia Double Peach Hibiscus that was covered with a heavy blanket , and my yummy Petite Negra Fig tree three years old , among other things.

Of all the plants, I am still upset about losing all my citrus trees especially my Variegated Satsuma because after 15 years it was starting to give me a decent crop and my Hibiscus because I LOVED that plant! And the fig tree, too! Besides the work involved in having to re-plant new ones I'm 72 years old and not in the best of health but can't afford to pay someone to do it for me , it's going to cost me an arm and a leg to replace everything.

Houston will be a bit wet, but mostly dry during Winter, expect most of the precip. Forecast may change, this is just a prediction. Olympia McFall. November 1, - am. Winter temperatures and precipitation will be below normal, on average, with above-normal snowfall in the north and below-normal in the south. The coldest periods will be in early, mid-, and late December; mid-January; and early to mid-February.

The snowiest periods will occur in mid- and late December, from early to mid-January, and in mid-March. Prolonged, heavy rainfall can therefore turn to snow. When warm air meets cold air — this is the most difficult situation to predict snow. Weather fronts mark the boundary between cold air and warm air, so when a weather system moves in, there will be warm air and moisture wrapped up in it.

While we need the moisture for snow to form, the warm air makes it very tricky to forecast if it will be turning to rain. As the warm air bumps into the cold air, it slides up over the top warm air rises.

The precipitation falls into the colder air lower down, but in time the air mixes together and makes the cold air slightly warmer, and the warm air slightly colder, and so then rain becomes more likely. Sometimes a fraction of a degree is the difference between rain and snow. You might also like. Freezing rain is a rare type of liquid precipitation that strikes a cold surface, and freezes almost instantly.

But, it's actually a far more useful forecast than just tossing out single numbers that almost certainly won't verify given the uncertainties and complexity in predicting weather, especially 3 to 4 days out.

Here's a map that shows the mostly likely snowfall for this storm. This will change as timing and resolution tighten up.

Then we turn cold for the weekend. Lows Sunday and Monday morning will be in the single digits, possibly dropping below zero in spots Monday morning. About Us Office Information.
