Experienced builders know that a structure cannot endure unless its foundation is strong. The words rock and stone, referring to the prime elements in ancient foundations, are used in the scriptures as metaphors signifying strength, steadiness, and durability.
The prophets used these metaphors in a variety of ways, conveying an impression of the unwavering character of God as well as the need for spiritual solidarity in the foundation and structure of our own lives. By looking at the statements of the prophets, we can see how meaningful these symbols are.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect, … a God of truth and without iniquity. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. It is interesting to follow the development of this idea in the rest of Scripture. This prophecy is set amidst a condemnation of men who trust in ways of their own devising—lies and human confidences wherein there is no profit. Peter makes the matter clear. There is power in the Stone: power to save and power to destroy.
The Stone is eternal; it is Christ. Those who believe and are obedient rest upon a sure foundation. Those who reject the Stone do so at their own peril. The Stone will destroy them in the end. What saith the Scripture? Destruction awaits the rejectors. There is no room for anything but the Stone and those who belong to it. The rest is like chaff which shall be blown away.
This is symbolic of a mountain or a large stone blocking a person's individual path in life or resolution to a circumstance. Stones can represent truths or concepts that are difficult to understand or accept. The Old Testament describes hail, which literally meant stones plummeting and destroying. In the symbolic sense, it means to have a hard truth delivered and then suffer the discomfort of realizing how applying those truths will effect your life.
Precious stones such as topaz, emerald, pearls and sapphires are listed in the Bible and have meanings of their own. In the Old Testament, the 12 different precious stones were used to symbolize the 12 tribes of Israel. In the New Testament, these stones are used symbolically to describe how the new city of Jerusalem will be built. This being was named Lucifer Ezekiel , who later became Satan the devil.
