Who is samson regina spektor

Not entirely buying it. So Regina Spektor takes the story and fills in some details for us. We find out through her lyrics that they are indeed living together and sharing a bed, that they met at some point quite a while before the infamous haircut, that they're attracted to each other and have a physical relationship, and that Samson likes to eat bread as a midnight snack.

Perhaps as fuel in between love-making sessions. Finally we have a love story here. He smiles when she asks to cut his hair and kisses her afterwards.

He willingly accepts weakness because his love for her is so strong. Now we can understand better why Samson would make such an impulsive decision, because we get why and how he loves her and that's the kind of stuff you do when you're in love.

Another theme from the story that Regina addresses is the guilt associated with these irresponsible choices of the heart. In the Bible, Delilah threatens Samson into telling her by accusing him of not loving her enough. OK, we've seen this kind of couples' drama before. Maybe what Regina's Delilah is feeling here is some serious guilt when she says, "I have to go. However, in the song, it doesn't appear that Samson actually died; he didn't even pull the columns down.

So the guilt doesn't really have to do with what happened later. Instead, Delilah's angry at herself for forcing Samson into proving his love for her through some inane act instead of just being content with how he wants to show her.

It's that selfish insecurity we all get when we fall in love with someone and desperately need them to confirm our feelings with their own. Otherwise, our love would be unrequited and we'd be stuck writing depressing sonnets for the rest of our lives. So what Regina Spektor does is simple: she takes a story we've all at least heard of and fills in the bare-bones version with the meat of a living, pulsing romance.

No one could figure out the source of his strength. According to the bible, Delilah tricked him into telling her his secret: that it is his hair that gives him his strength. This leads to his demise, as Delilah cuts it into the middle of the night, and Sampson is unable to defend himself, and the whole city falls on him.

I think many women wish that men would more often let down their machismo guards and reveal themselves. Regina may still be looking for a Sampson who will let her cut his hair I couldn't agree more. I agree. One thing I love about the lyrics is it could be many meanings. I hate when songs hit you over the head with its meaning. I never thought of it this way, but it seems really spot on. EllEyeEssAye on July 11, This is a great explanation of the song lyrics, but a positive one.

If it isn't positive then I think that Regina may be referring to a man that was her Samson, and because he loved her he was willing to be vulnerable. In the song she cuts his hair in his sleep, like to hurt him, to take his strength away. It seems as if she left him after she conquered him. She loved him first, and then she found away to lose it. General Comment I love Regina because she writes little stories, like short fiction, instead of just writing all about her own life and it is very refreshing. She has said herself that that's how she writes all of her songs, like stories, so she can take on any point of view Anyway I think this definitely has to do with Samson, but not Delilah. I think it's like Regina taking the point of view of a woman who came before Delilah, who truly loved Samson instead of just wanting to cut off his hair so he would lose his strength.

But Samson loved her and trusted her enough to let himself be vulnerable with her. He let her cut off his hair. But their love ended for whatever reason, and she is reflecting on how beautiful it was even though no one will ever know about it because no one ever mentioned it. At least that's how I look at it Also I think "Your hair was long when we first met" sort of meant that he had his guard up, and that he didn't want to let her in.

I don't think she regretted cutting his hair at all, I mean it says, "And he told me that I had done alright and kissed me 'til the morning light" so I think they were happy. But then Delilah came along and that was the story that everyone heard about. No matter how you look at it, bottom line, very pretty song. And a great way to open up her album Songs. General Comment For some reason, I don't think this song is very linear.

For me it seems to jump perspectives a lot - like, I can't say for sure "This is from the perspective of the woman who first loved Samso", because to me, the repeated "You are my sweetest downfall" sounds like something Samson would be saying.

I think this song does a really good job of showing how with Delilah, when his hair is cut Second verse , he's very disconnected - He's just lost his source of power, and he goes and eats some bread, and goes to sleep, but with this other woman, he "Kisses her till the morning light" - how Samson really had that deep emotional connection with this other woman.

Smooth-a-tron on August 10, Link. General Comment To go on a different path, I think this song is about her own "Samson" who had cancer. She tried a couple times, "Samsmanskay Samskemansk, can I just say Samson? She told me again how she liked sensitive men and she said that maybe if Samson had cut his hair then he'd have to be more sensitive and she would like him. Anyways we got back to her place, one of those big studios with a really high ceiling.

She got the place so she could play her music all the time without people complaining. She played a few of the more softer, quieter songs which I loved.

She offered me something to eat, but we got into the kitchen and she had all this weird Russian food, so I just asked her to get me a piece of wonderbread, that would be good enough. She asked me if I was going to stay and I said I wanted to. I won't bore you with the details of the afterwards, but I'll say it was my first time and I was no stallion, but I held her for a while after. I told her how beautiful she was and how beautiful this whole night had been, but at the same time sad because I knew that I didn't live here and we couldn't have a relationship.

We talked for a while about stupid little things and eventually fell asleep in each others arms. She had another gig to go to the next day so she was off in a different direction. I thanked her as she left and she told me that she was proud to be the first girl who loved me. I went back to my friends bragging, of course, but I figured this was girl was just one of hundreds trying desperately to make it and never succeeding. My life went on, and it never really occurred to me to look up this girl and see how she was doing, partially because I was busy with a serious relationship.

Out of the blue, a few months ago she sent me a CD in the mail -- autographed, saying: "To Kyle Samsonsanssky..
